Raising Little Athletes: Why Gymnastics Comes First

Pro-baller Tim Castagne: The Little Gym helps my daughters

At The Little Gym, our monthly themes are designed to do more than simply keep classes exciting. Each one supports an important stage of childhood development while helping children build confidence through movement, exploration, and play.

This month, we are celebrating Awesome Athletes — a theme focused on introducing children to the fundamental movement skills that form the foundation of almost every sport they try as they grow.

Before children can confidently play football, swim, dance, play tennis, or join athletics, they first need to develop the building blocks behind those activities. Skills like balance, coordination, body awareness, strength, agility, throwing, kicking, and timing all begin in early childhood.

Gymnastics is often called the “foundation sport” because it teaches children how to move their bodies confidently in every plane of movement and safely in space. Rather than specialising too early in one activity, children who experience a wide range of movement patterns, making gymnastics a super sport when developing physical literacy- the confidence and ability to move in many different ways.

“I believe that The Little Gym is extremely helpful for my daughters. They’re learning coordination, balance, and psychomotor skills in general and they are also learning to understand their bodies, build confidence, and build strong foundations. All of these are needed later in life as an athlete. Learning these skills early in my life definitely helped me reach my goals and realise my dream of becoming a professional football player.”

It is important to note that while these fundamental movement skills create the foundation for all sports and physical activity, having this physical literacy also helps children build confidence in their bodies, develop resilience, and form a positive emotional connection with movement. When children enjoy being active from an early age and feel capable while doing it, they are far more likely to carry that confidence and love for sport with them as they grow.

Parent & Child: Learning Through Movement Together
In our Parent & Child classes, Awesome Athletes is all about introducing little ones to early sports-based movement in a playful, pressure-free way. At this age, children learn best through exploration and repetition, alongside a trusted grown-up.

This month you may notice classes incorporating skills such as:

  • Rolling and crawling
  • Kicking balls
  • Throwing beanbags
  • Balancing
  • Running and jumping
  • Climbing and swinging

While these activities may look simple, they are building incredibly important developmental foundations. Learning how to throw supports their hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Kicking develops balance, coordination, and crossing the midline of the body. Climbing and hanging strengthen core muscles and grip strength, both of which support posture and overall body control.

Most importantly, children begin developing a positive emotional connection to movement. They learn that being active feels fun, rewarding, and exciting- something that will have a lasting impact as they grow.

Our Parent & Child environment also allows children to build confidence at their own pace. Every small achievement, whether it is balancing independently for the first time or successfully kicking a ball toward a target, helps develop self-belief alongside physical skills.

Funny Bugs and Giggle Worms (ages 3-5 years): Building Coordination, Confidence, and Teamwork
As children move into our Pre-K classes, Awesome Athletes introduces more structured skill development while still keeping learning imaginative and engaging. It’s a super fun month for our pre-schoolers, they’re having more time with small equipment; balls, hockey sticks, frisbees and hurdles and even more…

At this stage, children are developing greater body awareness and coordination, which means they are ready to begin combining movement skills together. They may practise:

  • Jumping over obstacles
  • Running with control
  • Catching and throwing with accuracy
  • Balancing on beams
  • Kicking toward targets
  • Following simple game rules and team activities

These experiences help children strengthen agility, reaction time, and coordination which are all essential for future sports participation. They are developing listening skills, patience, resilience, and teamwork through group games and challenges.

One of the most valuable parts of gymnastics-based training at this age is variety. Rather than repeating one specific sporting movement, children are exposed to many different ways of moving. This helps create adaptable, confident movers who are more likely to feel comfortable trying new sports and activities later on.

Our pre-schoolers are also beginning to understand that progress comes through practice. Learning to keep trying after wobbling, missing a target, or struggling with a new skill continues to build resilience both inside and outside the gym.

Flips, Twisters, Aerials and Jets (6-12 years): Strong Foundations for Lifelong Love of Movement & Sport
In our Primary School classes, Awesome Athletes helps children refine their athletic skills while continuing to build strength, flexibility, coordination, and confidence. This is another very exciting month for our older kids. They often get to showcase their skills from their other sports during parts of the class. Whilst we are non- competitive, it’s also really fun for them to have small challenges amongst each other, racing, strength challenges and short ball games. It feels like a true celebration of sport.

By this age, many children are beginning to participate in sports outside of school or exploring new hobbies. The movement foundations developed through gymnastics can support success across a huge range of activities, from football and dance to martial arts, cheerleading, athletics, and swimming.

Children may work on:

  • Speed and agility drills
  • Dynamic balance
  • Core strength
  • Coordination sequences
  • Ball skills
  • Power and controlled movement

Gymnastics teaches children how to generate strength, control momentum, land safely, and understand how their body moves through space. These are transferable athletic skills that benefit almost every sport.

But perhaps even more importantly at this age , gymnastics massively helps children develop confidence in themselves. It teaches them to persevere through challenges, celebrate progress, and trust their abilities.

At The Little Gym, our goal is never just to teach children skills for today. We aim to help them build a lifelong love of movement and the confidence to try new things. Awesome Athletes is a wonderful reminder that every jump, throw, balance, and kick is helping children build foundations that will support them for years to come.

Every child deserves every opportunity to thrive and reach their potential. Get in touch with our teachers today. Ask how to get TWO FREE CLASSES for your child.
